Welcome to ESPOO
an extra service of European City Guide / ECG

Information about ESPOO Espoo is the fastest growing city on the southern coast of Finland, and is the second largest city after Helsinki. It has a population of 224.231 inhabitants. Espoo has a shoreline of 58 kilometres, and is comprised of 165 islands, which, in summertime, can be reached by public waterbus. Modern and eclectic, Espoo is well known as a centre for high technology, as well as a vibrant and cultural city. It is also a metropolis surrounded by nature, and the purpose of the city has always been to preserve it this. The university attracts students from all over the world, and has made Espoo an important centre for technology and academics in Europe. In fact, over 39 percent of the city’s population holds a university degree. The city has five centres: Tapiola, Leppäivaara, Espoonlahd, Matinkylä-Olari and the centre of Espoo. The Garden City of Tapiola is the most popular, because of it’s modernist and classical architecture and lots of green spaces. It’s also a great city for the activity-minded, providing 125 miles of skiing trails (37 of which are lighted), a 373-mile network of biking trails, and 500 sports facilities. For a less strenuous outing, visitors flock to Nuuksio National Park, which offers a unique glimpse into Finnish wildlife, and the Archipelago, which has a stunning, 36-mile stretch of seashore with 124 islands. Cultural activities are also a specialty of this city, and it would be worth going to Espoo’s sundry dining destinations, the seven museums, and renown chamber orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta.
